Hurricane Preparedness Month

The month of May is officially recognised by the Department of Disaster Management and Emergencies as ‘Hurricane Preparedness Month’. The Department uses this period to share pertinent information to the residents of the Turks and Caicos Islands aimed at strengthening their individual resilience for the upcoming Atlantic Hurricane Season. This year’s theme is “Plan Ahead, Stay Ahead – 2025 Hurricane Ready”.

The Hurricane season is June 1st to November 30th; and is projected to be ‘above average’; based upon the forecast from Colorado State University in April 2025. The Atlantic Basin is projected to experience seventeen (17) named storms, nine (9) Hurricanes and four (4) major hurricanes.

The forecasters’ prediction of an ‘above average’ Atlantic Hurricane is primarily based on the sub-tropical eastern Atlantic Ocean and Caribbean Sea surface temperatures.  Warmer waters provide a catalyst for the intensification of storms.  A warm Atlantic also leads to lower atmospheric pressure and more unstable atmosphere, these conditions may promote hurricane formation.

The Department urges all residents to not wait until a storm is approaching to get prepared, now is the time to review your emergency plan, stock up on supplies, and stay informed.  Residents should have a disaster kit with essentials such as water, non-perishable food, medications, flashlights, batteries, and other essentials. Ensure that you have a plan in place for pets and family members with special needs.  Important documents and policies, such as insurance should be up-to date and kept secured.

DDME also takes this opportunity to officially launch our Newsletter, “PREPARED” commemorating “Hurricane Preparedness Month”.    We encourage you to visit our social media pages for weekly updates during the month of May.
