ENFORCEMENT OF TOURISM STANDARDS

The Department of Tourism Regulations (DTR) has commenced issuing Enforcement Notices to unregistered tourism accommodations across the Turks and Caicos Islands. The Department has adopted a zero-tolerance stance toward non-compliance under the Tourism Regulations Ordinance 2023.

With over 1,300 known accommodations currently operating throughout the country, only 50% are registered with DTR. Unregistered properties continue to pose serious challenges to the tourism industry—negative guest experiences at these locations damage our reputation, lead to poor online reviews, and weaken the effectiveness of national marketing efforts.

Minister of Tourism, Hon. Zhavargo Jolly, reinforced the government’s position:

“As Minister of Tourism, I fully support the Department of Tourism Regulations in their enforcement efforts. For too long, unregistered accommodations have operated outside the system—undermining guest confidence, diminishing our brand, and robbing the country of rightful revenue. This is a matter of fairness, public safety, and protecting the Turks and Caicos experience. Every operator who benefits from our tourism economy must be held to the same standards. We are building a world-class destination, and accountability is not optional.”

The Department is calling on all accommodation providers to register immediately to avoid penalties, fines, and potential prosecution.

“We have an excessive number of unregistered properties in the Turks and Caicos, resulting in a loss of TCIG revenue that contributes to the country’s economic growth. Furthermore, registering with DTR provides a quality assurance guarantee that the guest is getting the best service possible while on the island. We have existed for two years now, and there has been an extended grace period,” said DTR Director Avi Adams.

“Our role is to ensure that every operator meets the legal requirements and maintains the high standards expected of a world-class destination like Turks and Caicos.”

All tourism accommodation providers are strongly urged to visit the Department of Tourism Regulations immediately or contact the office via email at tourismregulations@gov.tc and via phone at +1649 338 – 5348 for guidance on completing their registration.
