Successful return of the Annual Kite Flying Competition

The Easter weekend marked the much-anticipated return of a cherished island tradition: the Kite Flying Competition, hosted by the Ministry of Tourism in Grand Turk and Providenciales. With clear skies and ample wind, the event was a lively celebration of culture, creativity, and community spirit.

The air was filled with bursts of island colour and flair as several displays of custom-made kites, each uniquely designed and crafted, took flight. The intricate designs and vibrant colours of these kites captivated families, visitors, and residents alike, who gathered to celebrate this cherished Easter tradition, now in its 30th year.

Participants competed in various categories, including Largest Kite, Smallest Kite and Best Traditional Kite, showcasing both innovation and a deep respect for cultural practices that have been lovingly passed down through generations. This connection to our roots was evident in every kite that soared into the sky.

The Honourable Zhavargo Jolly, Minister of Tourism, expressed his joy at the event’s return: “It was heartwarming to see our communities reunite once again to celebrate this beautiful tradition of Easter. The creativity displayed in the colourful kites, the unity felt among families and friends, and the cultural pride evident in the vibrant costumes truly reflect our rich heritage. I am both pleased and proud to see the Kite Flying Competition return to its rightful place in our annual festivities, bringing joy and fostering connections among all who participated.”

The Ministry of Tourism sincerely thanks all participants, volunteers, and sponsors. Your support and contributions were vital to the event’s success.

The return of the Kite Flying Festival not only celebrates Easter but also serves as a reminder of the vibrant culture and unity that defines the Turks and Caicos Islands.
