Drug Recall:  Little Remedies ® Honey Cough Syrup – MedTech Products Inc.

The Ministry of Health and Human Services (MoHHS) wishes to notify all local suppliers and the general public about a drug recall circulated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) concerning Little Remedies ® Honey Cough Syrup.

This voluntary recall – led by MedTech Products Inc. – has been initiated due to the identification of microbial contamination in five lots of the cough syrup. The five (5) lots are listed in the table below.

The microorganism,Bacillus cereus, is responsible for the contamination and is known to cause two types of food-borne illnesses. One type is identified by the occurrence of nausea, vomiting and stomach cramps (which usually occur 1 to 6 hours after eating or drinking contaminated food). The second type is identified by the occurrence of stomach cramps and diarrhoea (which usually occurs 8 to 16 hours after eating or drinking contaminated food). It must be noted that although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term illness, exposure to high levels of Bacillus cereus can lead to death.

The Minister of Health and Human Services – Hon. Kyle R. Knowles, and the MoHHS’ top priority is to ensure public health safety and so in light of this update are imploring all local suppliers to:

1. Examine their stock to determine if they have the affected lots/batches of Little Remedies® Honey Cough Syrup.
2. Immediately discontinue the sale of the affected lots/batches.
3. Quarantine all remaining stock(s) of the cough syrup for possible disposal by the Environmental Health Department (contact: 338-2142).
4. Notify your overseas suppliers for any additional information.

Additionally, Hon. Knowles and the MoHHS are urging patients/consumers to:

1. Immediately discontinue the use of the affected lots/batches.
2. Contact their physicians and/or pharmacist if they have any questions or concerns before using any Little Remedies ® Honey Cough Syrup.
3. To report any suspected side effects associated with Little Remedies ® Honey Cough Syrup via the MoHHS Adverse Drug Reaction Form found at https://gov.tc/docs/ADR.pdf.
