Environmental Health Department Urges Proper Covering of Waste During Transport

Providenciales, Turks and Caicos Islands – Friday, 11 April 2025: The Environmental Health Department (EHD) is reminding all individuals and businesses transporting solid waste to the disposal site to ensure all loads are securely covered. A securely covered load is one that is fully enclosed or protected by a lid, net, tarp, or similar covering, preventing any waste from spilling, falling, or blowing onto roads and public spaces.

The Department has observed an increase in garbage and debris along the sides of roads. This is believed to be partly due to vehicles transporting waste without proper covering, leading to littering during transit.

Under Section 45(1) of the Road Traffic Ordinance (Chapter 13.01), vehicles carrying materials such as waste, gravel, sand, or other loose matter must be securely covered to prevent spillage. Failing to do so is an offence and may result in penalties.

Improperly secured loads not only affect the appearance of our communities but also contribute to environmental pollution, including the contamination of our marine ecosystems and natural resources.

The Environmental Health Department encourages the public to be part of the solution. If you witness waste being littered from a moving vehicle, please take a photo or note the vehicle’s license plate and report it by calling 338-2142/2143 or emailing ehd@gov.tc.

Let’s work together to keep our islands clean and safe.
